Works For Me Wednesday: Check Register January 31, 2007

I never enjoyed keeping track of our expenses in the register that comes with your box of checks.  It’s too small for me.  Besides that, my husband usually had a book of check with him and I had one too.  We had too much to keep track of!

We ditched the little ones.  The kids have fun playing with them.  We make copies of a full size check register.  Ours came from Larry Burkette’s Financial workbook but there are several online.  We keep the register in a 3-ring binder.  It’s simple too keep up with because we have duplicate checks and we can just record what was spent on bill paying day.  There is plenty of room to write and you can see it better.  The front of the binder has a clear pocket and we keep an ongoing list of all of our important passwords and log-in information since we pay most of our bills online now.

Another good idea is to designate a place for all of your receipts.  We don’t write many checks anymore, we use our debit cards.  Having place to empty our wallets of receipts has been great for us.

Frugal Friday:Refashioning Jeans and Overalls January 26, 2007

I have had so much fun making skirts for my daughter from jeans that she has outgrown.

At 6 years old she’s growing taller than she is in the tummy so the jeans are just becoming too short.  Turning them into skirts has been fun for both of us.

There are several sites for instructions if you google it.  But my favorite site is here.

I’ve just used material that I’ve had on hand.  So for me the cost has been $0 but you find inexpensive material at your favorite store.  This is an excellent project for a beginning seamstress or a Mother-Daughter project.

This is a picture of the skirt:  00000000110.JPG

After finishing the skirt and I was inspired to turn her brothers outgrown overalls into a dress too!  (for my daughter of course!)  00000000225.JPG

Give it a try!  What have you got to lose?  Nothing.  But you have a really cute skirt to gain!

Daffodils in January January 25, 2007

Filed under: Life with children — Paige @ 2:25 pm

I know Spring is arriving when my children come in with a small bouquet of Daffodils for me to display. It becomes a competition between them. Who can pick the newest bloom first and surprise mom? I love it!

But it’s January and guess what I have in my kitchen. Yep, you guessed it. Daffodils. I’ve actually gotten a few bouquets this year. The weather here in the south has been so mild that all kinds of things have begun blooming. Unfortunately though, this past weekend it turned very cold and I’m sure that wasn’t good for the confused plants.

Daffodils

Well, I enjoyed the tease of Spring while it lasted. It can’t be too far around the corner!

Socks.  Urgh.  We’re not friends.  Apparently the socks are not friends with each other either.  They have a hard time staying together after they’re pulled off of our feet.

The best way I have found to remedy lone sock disorder is to keep a small basket (size matters in this case!) in my laundry room window sill.  As I am taking laundry out of my dryer I throw the socks in a pile.  If I can quickly put them together I do but I don’t spend a lot of time finding mates because by this time someone needs me for something!  Before I leave the laundry room I toss them in my small basket.

When the family sits down to watch TV together through the week I will pull out the basket and we sit there and sort and pair together.  In the meantime, if you don’t have socks in your drawer, you’re free to search the basket yourself.

Any socks that have been there for a while gets tossed in the trash or the craft box.  Not good stewardship, I know.  But this works for me.
